Changing Risk

Hazard and risk are no constants. They can change over time either due to developments in exposure and vulnerability as a consequence of human activity or by variations in external hazards e.g. due to a changing climate.

This panel shows you today's risk radar and line-histograms showing you the distribution of risk for each peril accross the population for today's and future conditions (if known, otherwise constant)

Total risk score today:

40.0 %

Natural Hazards

Natural hazards are diverse and their impact on each region unique. If a region is affected by a certain peril, its hazard can be quantified both by expected maximum impact within a certain time period or average annual conditions.

This panel shows you different perspectives on natural hazards affecting Malaysia contextualized towards their actual risk to the society and in absolute numbers.

Tropical Cyclone

With landfall on the destination Tropical Cyclones are strong precipitation events with sustained wind speeds beyond 118 km/h and landfall on this region - monthly cyclone statistics have been derived from historic events since 1950 provided by the IBTrACS database (NOAA)

Tsunami

Tsunami is considered relevant when it reaches at least 0.5m. Estimated based on our proprietary global tsunami hazard and risk modelling.

Sea Level Rise

Sea level rise is considered as the increase of sea level with respect to the local normal water levels. Data was made available by www.climateeconometrics.org/sealevel_rcp/

Climate

This panel provides various climate and weather related parameters. Contemporary data (1995) was calculated using the GLDAS (NOAA) dataset. Projects for 2060 are based on the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 models as provided by IPCC.
